Experience is garbage also. A lot of people have several years experiences. The codes they write may not exceed 200 lines.
The problem is, sometimes, you never get chance to improve your skills which are absolutely critical through experiences. For example, there is a production issue and you know there is nothing wrong with your java code. You knew there was problem probably with the system, specifically, the network but you do not know what is and how to resolve it. The problem makes your application not working. However, it is your application, to your boss, that is not working.
What you can do? Ask system admin and tell him his system has a problem. He asked you back what was the problem? You can not tell him I do not know but there is a problem.
You have to point out the root. What makes you capable to point out the root? Experience or knowledge?
It is easy you had previous SA experiences but most of time you do not and you have no chance to get this experience.
So you have to learn and to understand the system. A SCJP does not touch the system but SCJD do in some extent. When people talk about experience, they really mean the knowledge on the system. This knowledge can be obtained through either experience or learning. Certification is a good way to know how good is good enough. It is garbage to others, may be. To you, is is confidence for what you have already known. |
