1. Microsoft OS is better and better, now it's the best among all OS. After I used w2k server for a while, I started love it. I had known NT, theoretically, was more advanced then other operating systems. (Simply it’s designed later than others). But the quality of NT and lack of available functions made me ignore it. Win2k is an impressive OS I can’t find anything wrong with it.
2. However, I would not recommend W2K Server to my customers in most of situations now. Why? Although it’s the best OS, there are not many GOOD server side software available on W2K. I don’t think SQLServer can compete with Oracle yet, I don’t think the quality of Oracle for NT can compete with Oracle on UNIX yet -- but remember it’s not because of the OS technology.
3. Price factor is certainly another concern. Especially for none critical group servers, IIS vs Apache, SMB/linux vs w2k file server, Sendmail vs Exchange server. I’d choose the cheaper one.
4. Lack of support of MS, when you are administering/using UNIX software, you usually have more expertise available freely on Internet. The 20 years experience accumulated to make UNIX and its software more bug awareness, or, at least you always have work around.
5. I would guess Microsoft .net server would get more market share than UNIX in critical business sector (in 10 years). Linux take most market as group server. Most Brand UNIX will die.
6. I was also impressed by the Mac OS X, a Unix kernel but Apple interface. I hope it will gain the family PC market rapidly. Just a hope. |
