Except the hardware problems(RAM,HD,MB etc), the most possible reason is Win2000 can not identify MBR of your HD.
This maybe you have unix-like os on the HD or you had installed an Unix-like OS before, the MBR stays there.
Advise you use fdisk /mbr to rewrite the MBR . If it doesn't work, low-format the HD.
