ASRS is currently very fashionable in China but in reality it is very low in practical value.
ASRS has been around in the world for many years, at least 10-20 years old and has never been largely use in the world other than China.
Its only useful in certain industries handling specific type of goods and materials, usually its useful for homogenous products and in large volumes.
There are too many disadvantages of using ASRS.
High costs of installation, maintenance, very time consuming in resolving its breakdowns...etc
Very inconvenient and lacks flexibility.
I personally have built the first special ASRS in Asia 11 years ago, it has the state of art technology at that time, having the capability of moving around in 4 directions unlike most ASRS today only have forward and backward direction, also it has double deep forks in both directions (left or right).
But it was a major flop that causes my company to lose alot of business and profits.
In the end that ASRS was scrapped even though we had spent lots of money on it.
In logistics management especially warehouse management, we would want as much flexiblity as possible but at the same time we would want to use tools that can help us manage our tasks efficiently, speedily and accurately.
In my opinion, ASRS is a piece of shit except useful in certain industries like very small components where the human being will make mistakes easily and using small ASRS and robotic arms to handle it.
Also, it can be used in large volumes homogenous product environment, where each retrieval or storage is of a single SKU and in large pallets or boxes.
Unfortunately, in China, many companies have fallen to the trap of these ASRS companies especially Japanese ASRS companies like Daifuku, Okamura, etc
In the end these companies paid millions of USD and found that they have a big white elephant sitting there. |
