Find some open source software. Test it. Make notes online and share your learning.

Use your work time wisely to learn as much as you can.

There are a lot of opportunities within testing - if you can find the right company to work with.

And if you work hard, experiment, and share what you learn then you can open up new opportunities for others, as well as for yourself.

Great job on this. As someone with 30 years of software industry experience (29 in Testing) I see some things here that make me reflect and consider what I need to relearn and learn anew. I've been in the testing trenches just like you and can relate. At times it has not been an easy career/experience, but when I see a product I worked on go live and work well I take both pride and satisfaction in my efforts.

I want to thank you for your advice. I came to my present job with high hopes. I implemented automation just to make my job easier. I got stuck. I came across this article arguably when i needed it the most. I am now moving to one of the big four in 2 weeks that value their testing staff and I cannot wait. Thanks again for helping me realise I needed to change.
