Vectorwise 2.5.2 for Microsoft Windows on x86_64 (a64.win)
1.0 WelcomeThis readme contains information specific to Vectorwise running on Windows platforms. 2.0 Operating System SupportThe following operating systems are supported (as of the publishing of this document): ● Microsoft Windows 7 ● Microsoft Windows 2008 Vectorwise will work with UAC either ON or OFF as determined by site requirements. The Vectorwise product support life cycle policy determines the duration of support for Vectorwise on these operating systems unless the operating system's manufacturer drops support on a prior date. For the latest information about supported operating systems, visit http://www.actian.com/support-services/support. 2.1 Preprocessor and Compiler SupportVectorwise supports the following preprocessor and compiler: ● Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2008 3.0 System RequirementsThe disk space requirement for a default installation is 941 MB. 4.0 Installation Considerations4.1 Install as an AdministratorThe user that installs Vectorwise must be part of the Administrator group. This user then becomes the “owner” of the Vectorwise instance. 4.2 Multiple Vectorwise Instances on a Windows MachineVectorwise allows the installation of multiple copies of Vectorwise on a single Windows machine. Each Vectorwise instance is identified by a unique installation identifier (II_INSTALLATION). This installation identifier is included in the program group name and the service name. We strongly recommend that you start Vectorwise programs from the Windows Start Menu so that you can clearly identify which installation a given program belongs to. When working in a Windows Command Prompt environment, you must ensure that the value of II_SYSTEM is set correctly for that environment, and that the search, include, and lib paths list the Vectorwise directories in the desired order. For convenience, a shortcut to a proper Windows Command Prompt will be installed. 4.3 Safeguarding Passwords During Response File CreationWarning! Selecting the option to configure Vectorwise as a service will save user credentials into the response file in clear text. Specifying a standard or well known password for service credentials is not recommended. Use a placeholder password that is manually changed after the batch installation has completed. 4.4 Start Vectorwise as a ServiceVectorwise should be started as a Windows service. With Vectorwise started as a service, users other than the instance owner are able to execute certain DBA commands, including: ALTERDB, AUDITDB, CKPDB, INFODB, LOCKSTAT, LOGDUMP, LOGSTAT, RCPCONFIG, RCPSTAT, RELOCATEDB, ROLLFORWARDDB, UPGRADEDB, VERIFYDB, VWINFO, and VWLOAD. Notes: ● When starting Vectorwise under a local system account, the Interactive Performance Monitor can only be started by the local system account user and will not work under any other user, including the user that executed “ingstart -service.” ● If you do not check the box labeled “Start Vectorwise Service Automatically At System Startup” on the Vectorwise Configuration dialog box during the install, the Vectorwise service will be installed with no password set for its logon credentials. You must properly set the password for the Vectorwise service before using it. 4.5 Visual ToolsVectorwise on Windows is capable of operating as both a client and server for the Visual DBA tools. 4.6 Protocols SupportedVectorwise supports the following network protocols: ● TCP/IP Note: The new protocol driver tcp_ip is recommended over the obsolete wintcp, which is provided for backward compatibility and will be dropped in the future. ● SPX/IPX ● LANMAN 4.7 Uninstall WorkaroundThe Vectorwise uninstall process may hang if the installation has a large number of locations and backups. To work around this, cancel the uninstall process, delete checkpoint and data locations (directories), and restart the uninstall process: 1. Find non-default locations as follows: sql iidbdb SELECT AREA FROM iilocations WHERE AREA NOT LIKE 'II%' 2. Find default data and checkpoint locations as follows: ingprenv II_DATABASE ingprenv II_CHECKPOINT 3. Shut down the installation. 4. Delete the directories referenced in Steps 1 and 2 by using the Windows delete option. 5. Restart the uninstall process. 5.0 General Considerations5.1 Limitations in this ReleaseVectorwise on Windows has the following limitations: ● Large pages are not supported. ● The C# demonstration application is not supported. 5.2 Using Terminal Monitor with Multi-byte CharactersVectorwise requires that the character set be UTF8. Because Windows does not fully support a UTF-8 code page, the Vectorwise Terminal Monitor does not properly display multi-byte characters. We recommend that you use Actian Director, a new GUI-based DBA tool packaged with Vectorwise. Alternative query tools that support UTF-8 character encoding include but are not limited to the following: Note: Neither tool is officially supported by Actian Corporation.
