Hi Huang,

The IP in the connection string is public IP.

I find the real reason is that the oracle version of client is 9i and the version of RAC server is 10g.

When using 10g client to connect 10g RAC, S-S TAF is available.

Thanks for your finding. More test shows that the client's failover capability starts with 10.2.0.1, not anything below it including 10.1.0.5. So we have to say version of 10gR1 and below will have the problem, not 9i and below. What's your exact client version?

It's strange Oracle didn't say this in Sql*Plus New Features document:

Maybe they consider it as part of "Transparent Application Failover (TAF) Notification" in the overall New Features document:

As you say, I think the S-S TAF begins with 10.2.0.1.

The oracle client version is 9.2.0.1.0.
The RAC oracle server version is 10.2.0.1.0.

In this situation, I can't use S-S TAF function.

Are you talking about server or client version? My test shows that when the *client* is 10.2.0.1 or newer, connecting to a server (which happens to be 10.2.0.4 in all my test cases) has server-side TAF. If the client is 10.1.0.5 or older, the connection does not.

Your abbreviation "S-S' means "server side". Correct?

Yes, when I use 9.2.0.1.0 client to connect to 10.2.0.1.0 RAC server, the S-S TAF doesn't work.

S-S means "server side".

The location for your ASM home (or GRID home or GI home) is completely up to you. I personally like to separate it far away from $ORACLE_HOME. For instance, my DB ORACLE_HOME is /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db, but my GI home is /u01/app/grid as shown on the last line below (for which Oracle base is /u01/app/oracle):

$ env | grep HOME
HOME=/home/oracle
ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db
$ . oraenv
ORACLE_SID = [oracp71] ? +ASM1
The Oracle base for ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/grid is /u01/app/oracle
