I've been on many public forums over the past 12 years. Roughly chronologically, computational chemistry, Honda, Toyota, HTML, Javascript, Perl, LazyDBA, Oracle-L, dba-village, oraclefans.net in Chinese (non-existing), comp.databases.oracle.server (cdos), Solaris, and this itpub.net in Chinese. Apart from keeping myself abreast of current technology, one reason I choose to stay on this forum web site is that members are friendly to each other, plus the feeling that I may be contributing to the advancement of Chinese technical professionals' skills. After all, China is where I was from. Some features of this site are also appealing to me, such as new message notification.
I notice some members occasionally post messages to other public forums. One of them is worthy of a little bit caution. Cdos newsgroup (http://groups.google.com/group/comp.databases.oracle.server) is indexed by Google so searching is extremely easy. But that's by far the most hostile forum I've ever been on, presumably because a few frequent posters are always harsh on anybody not well known already. No comparison, no judgment. If you're on both sites, you know we're making an amicable environment here. Also note that all newsgroup postings reveal your original IP you post the messages from. If you care to hide your company affiliation, don't post to newsgroups from your company network.
Some features of this itpub.net site may need to be re-considered. Modern browsers including Firefox and latest IE6 block popup windows. I think advertisement can take a less aggressive way now. Popup windows have been deemed as bad Web programming practice for many years anyway. On the other hand, the Web site may encourage visitors to click on the advertisement links once in a while, if the number of clicks matters.
