workflow is a developing tool.

First,workflow itself is an integrated theory.  Base on this theory, different corp devolop differnent product. So workflow itself is not a running platform.   
Second, if you just regard it as a platform, you should not  have deep insight into it.Because  finite product; unfinite thory.

Of course, the precodition is you want to study workflow.


developing tool is not equel to designing tool.

Now we say it's Workflow engine, not just workflow( If you are interested in workflow theory, you can read WfMC' reference materials)

You have lots of separated components, Purchasing, Order, MPS, RMA, etc. How can you provide a platform to connect the components dynamically as you want? Workflow engine likes a glue to let the tasks( work item ) go through a definite or indefinite( according to the logic) routing.

BAAN 的DEM是非常好的流程配置工具， 另外如果加上BAAN 的workflow 可以有工作流的功能。不过都怀疑国内没有人见过BAAN的workflow...
