Thank you! I was not aware of it.

The document says this information will be added to 11.2 documentation: "ASSM is required for LOB RETENTION to be in effect for BASICFILE LOBs." I searched for "basicfile". It's an 11g concept, the opposite of securefile. So before 11g, I think, all LOBs are considered as basicfile LOBs, so the ASSM restriction applies.
