On 32-bit Linux, the memory usage is divided this way: 3 GB for user space, 1 GB for kernel space. So you can have close to 3 GB SGA and PGA. I don't know exactly how much. If it's still 300 MB reserved for miscellaneous OS overhead, then SGA plus PGA can be about 2.7 GB.
I'm not sure about UNIX (Solaris e.g.). Maybe the same.
