中國人過新年喜歡圖個熱鬧，老老少少一大家子圍坐在巨大的餐桌旁吃年夜飯，那個場面肯定令外國人歎為觀止。但是面對如此之多的美味佳餚，手的長度就顯得有點不夠用，這個時候就需要“Lazy Susan”來幫忙了。
也許有人會問Lazy Susan是誰啊，她能幫我夾菜？其實，Lazy Susan指的並不是一位名叫蘇珊的懶姑娘，而是餐桌上的轉盤。這麼一說，大家就明白了：桌子太大，為了方便上菜、夾菜，人們在桌子的中央設計了一個可以轉動的大盤子，菜品都放在這個盤子上。只要輕輕轉動盤子，你想要的菜就會轉到你面前。

根據《牛津英語大詞典》的說法，China 一詞大約來源於兩千年前的梵文，而且在多種亞洲文字中都有其變體。在歐洲，最早使用該詞的非馬可•波羅莫屬了。該字出現在英文辭彙中大概可以追溯到１５５５年。《美國遺產大詞典》則認為，『中國』一詞與西元前三世紀的秦朝有關。秦始皇憑藉他超人的致院陀⒂碌能婈犚慌e消滅六國，結束了長期諸侯分裂割據的紛爭局面，統一『中國』建立了強大的秦王朝。但他之後的秦二世卻昏庸無道，治國無方，民不聊生，官逼民反，結果統一的秦朝很快遭到覆滅，整個國家又重新陷入四分五裂戰亂年年的局面。
太簡單了，China 一詞不就是指我們『中國』嗎？不錯，China 的確就是指中國，但如果有人告訴你『中國』一詞並非中國人的首創，可能你怎樣也無法相信，從情感上也無法接受。『中國』這一稱謂被我們沿用少說也有數千年的歷史了，難道它還是一舶來品？遺憾的是，事實正是這樣的。

英語當中許多語彙與體育邉邮欠植婚_的，kick就是一例。足球比賽的第一腳是kickoff,這一腳後比賽便開始了。久而久之，這個片語也用於日常生活中，如這樣一句話“Starting on Friday, the soldiers kicked off the second round of the landmine clearance drive”怎麼譯呢？是不是從星期五開始士兵踢地雷？邏輯上顯然是錯誤的，因為踢地雷不啻於送命。而且原文中說是second round（第二輪），命豈有送了一次再送一回的理？kick off在此就是開始的意思，相當於比賽開始，因而全句可譯為：“士兵在星期五又開始第二輪的掃雷行動。”再舉一例：“They kicked off a ten day tour of China with a party in Beijing. ”（他們在北京搞了個聚會，以此開始對中國的十天旅行。）

中國小吃英文表達

羽毛球的來歷
shuttle是“穿梭”，cock是公雞，那shuttlecock是什麼呢？把公雞穿梭起來，該是什麼？
伊湖居士幼年的時候，聽說某局長因貪污受賄案被抓，據說，該局長滿後院都是公雞，用繩子“穿梭”起來，可見貪污受賄之多，莫非shuttlecock是“局長”的意思？或是“後院”或“受賄”？
都不像！
伊湖居士苦苦思索不得其解，就信步某大學操場，不知不覺進入羽毛球場，兩方正廝殺得激烈，伊湖居士渾然不覺。
“啪”的一聲，一個什麼玩意兒正好打在居士眉心，嚇了一跳，再看是什麼東西打來時，伊湖居士不由得哈哈大笑：真是踏破鐵鞋無覓處，得來全不費工夫！
原來是羽毛球，就是它！
最早的羽毛球可能是把公雞串起來，用桌面當球拍來打，“眾神之父”宙斯和太陽神阿波羅就是這樣玩羽毛球的。而傳到人間時，羽毛球就簡化成把公雞羽毛穿在一起了。shuttlecock，羽毛球。
